ABOUT THE GALLERY
The River Art Group is one of the largest and finest
artist cooperatives in the country. The River Art Group is housed
in the historic Florian House within
historic La Villita in downtown San Antonio. The art
group was formed during the summer of 1947, when two small groups
of San Antonio artists had the notion of doing a combined art
show on the refurbished San Antonio Riverwalk. After electing
a Board of Directors and incorporating as the River Art Group,
Inc., the first River Art Show was held on the first full weekend
in November 1947. The River Art Show has been the most important
show and sale of local artists' work ever since, and it is now
held in La Villita, the Villita Assembly Hall, and on the Riverwalk.
An exciting feature of the October show is the competition,
open to members only. Generous prize money awarded in four major
categories is enough to have members eager to participate. The
show and competition attracts visitors from across the country.
The River Art Group also sponsors an art show on Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday during San Antonio's Fiesta celebration in April.
The hard work and total dedication from so many of the members over the years has contributed immeasurably to the longevity of our self-supporting organization. All activities are directed and executed by members, including the daily operation of the gallery. Having their art showcased daily in our La Villita gallery is a primary reason so many local artists apply for membership.
Some 350 River Art Group artists work in a wide variety of
media. In the gallery you will see work in acrylic, oil, watercolor,
pen and ink, pastel, photography, clay, metal and more. Some
artists also offer fine art reproductions of their work.
